What Makes the IB Education System in Norway Different
IB is a small option in a country where the national system dominates.
Most Norwegian students follow the national curriculum through videregående skole. IB is the exception, found mainly at international schools and a few specialised institutions. That means cohorts are small, and some HL options may be taught to two or three students, or not offered at all. We cover the missing pieces with subject-specific tutors who run HL and SL content properly rather than at a surface level.
Time zones are workable, if you plan them
Norway is 3.5 to 4.5 hours behind India, depending on the season, because clocks change in Norway and not in India. Norwegian school days tend to finish early in the afternoon, so after-school sessions between 4 pm and 7 pm Norway time work well for most students. We lock in a fixed weekly slot and adjust it when the clocks shift in March and October, so no family has to chase a changed time.
Private tutoring in Norway is expensive and hard to find for IB.
Local tutors who know the IB criteria, the IA expectations, and the TOK essay are rare, and hourly rates are high. Online tuition from IB-trained tutors is a practical alternative. Students get a subject specialist, not a general homework helper, and parents get a schedule that doesn't depend on who happens to live nearby.

Norwegian grades run from 1 to 6, while IB uses a 1 to 7 scale per subject with criteria-based assessment. Students moving from Norwegian lower secondary into the MYP or DP, or from India and other countries into a Norwegian IB school, often need time to learn how IB marks answers. We start every student with a diagnostic and then teach the command terms, mark scheme logic, and IA criteria directly.
Long winters and short days make flexible, home-based learning useful.
From November through February, daylight is short and many students would rather stay home than travel for tuition. Sessions can be held from a desk at home with a good internet connection. Parents don't have to organise transport, and students don't lose study time to commuting. It's a small thing, but families tell us it makes the routine easier to keep.
